Tony Harper was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. Coach Harper attended Austin High School from 1960-64 where he was a letterman in football, basketball and baseball. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso (Texas Western) from 1964-68. He received a BA in Physical Education with a minor in Science. He began his coaching career at Burges High School in 1968 as a junior varsity coach and soon became the head coach of that program, a job he held for 14 years. In 1985 he moved to El Paso High School as the head coach from 1985-90. He was the first head basketball coach at Montwood High School when it opened in 1990, and remained there until 2013. In 2010, Montwood’s gym was renamed Tony Harper Gymnasium. Coach Harper was named the 2013 National High School Coaches Association’s National High School Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year, and the 2012 UIL Texas High School Basketball Coach of the Year. Now the head coach at Cathedral High School, he recently passed 1,000 career wins. In 2018, Coach Harper was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
Mike Brooks
Head Coach, Americas High School
Coach Brooks has spent more than 30 years as a high school basketball coach, the first 15 as a assistant for Tony Harper (5 years at El Paso High, 10 years at Montwood), and the last 18 years as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Americas High School. He has taken his Americas teams to the postseason 9 times, with 5 district championships, 5 bi-district championships and 2 area championships. His 2015-16 Americas team finished the season with a 32-1 record.
Raul Lopez
Head Coach, El Dorado High School
El Dorado head coach Raul Lopez was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. Coach Lopez attended and played basketball at Bel Air High School. He attended Azusa Pacific University from 1988-92 and was the starting point guard for the school. He received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Social Science with a minor in Physical Education. He was a varsity assistant at Montwood High School where he helped lead the rams to multiple district championships, area championships, and an elite 8 appearance from 2002-2011. Coach Lopez has been a lead basketball clinician at Texas Prep Basketball School in Commerce, Texas and Snow Valley Basketball School in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Tom Shukitt
Former Head Coach, Chapin High School
Coach Shukitt has been coaching basketball for 25 years — 11 of those were as head coach at Chapin High School. His teams won 6 district championships, 4 bi-district championships, and 3 area championships. He compiled 218 varsity wins, and his 2008-09 Chapin squad won the prestigious Whataburger Basketball Tournament championship in Fort Worth — the first El Paso-area team to achieve the honor.
